The omitted line

The omitted line

Growing up in the "yes" generation, I've heard a certain saying more times than I could remember, said to me and others growing up alongside me... "You can be whatever you want to be." It's a sweet saying, it urges growing kids to aim for the stars, "Dream big and it'll happen!" This constant surrounding of parental yes-men could very well inspire children to make goals, yet there was a line that has been lost, but finally found. Let me piece the missing saying together with its overused sibling, "you can be whatever you want -- So long as you work for it." It wasn't until now that I've heard the completed saying and the weight that it now carries is immense. With the completion of this millennial battle cry, realism sets in and not for the worse, it is so much for the better. The sooner somebody realizes that nothing in life is free the sooner they can form a link to the real world. Now let me be the first to tell you, my predecessors, my peers, and my successors, you don't 'deserve' a damn thing, you will succeed only as far as you allow yourself to. Now go out and chase your dreams, they aren't just going to fall in your lap. This isn't to say that you're guaranteed to achieve what you set out for and while it is hard to fail, it is worse never to have tried to succeed.
